XDE and Friends

It is worth mentioning that this site is put together to help spread the word of Boxwell. As one of the nation's premier Scout camps, Boxwell has a long and rich history, something worth preserving and sharing. The information here (and in the archives) is done all by volunteers, a group called XDE and Friends.

XDE and Friends began as a group primarily made of Scouters that served as District Executives for Middle Tennessee Council in the early 1970s. Almost all had been members of the camp staff when Boxwell at Old Hickory opened in 1960 and continued to serve the Council in the next decade. After leaving professional Scouting and going out to 'make their millions,' this group stayed in contact.

By the early 1980s, the group began an annual campout at a secret, undisclosed location near Boxwell on Memorial Day Weekend. Spurred on by Ranger Bobby Smith, the group got together to rehash old times and work on improving Boxwell. It is from these annual meetings that not only did the group grow to include more recent, non-professional former staff members, but many great ideas were born. The Boxwell staff reunions of 1983, 1989 and 1999 all emerged from these meetings. Prototype dining hall tables in memory of great Scouters were created as well. The Boxwell Multimedia CD Project is also from the work of these Scouters.

Thus, this group of volunteers is interested in preserving and maintaining Boxwell history and is happy to provide this website and VirtualBoxwell.org.
